Theme: “New Frontiers in Steel and Concrete Structures Design

Steel and Concrete Structures Conferenced 2018 aims in proclaim knowledge and share new ideas amongst the Engineers, Geologists, Contractors, professionals, industrialists and students from research area of advanced methods in steel and concrete structures design and indulge in interactive discussions at the event. This Engineering gathering guarantees that offering the thoughts and ideas will enable and secure you the theme “New Frontiers in Steel and Concrete Structures Design”. Structural engineering depends upon a detailed knowledge of applied mechanics, materials science and applied mathematics to understand and predict how structures support and resist self-weight and imposed loads. To apply the knowledge successfully a structural engineer generally requires detailed knowledge of relevant empirical and theoretical design codes, the techniques of structural analysis, as well as some knowledge of the corrosion resistance of the materials and structures, especially when those structures are exposed to the external environment.

Structural members that are made up of two or more different materials are known as composite elements. The main benefit of composite elements is that the properties of each material can be combined to form a single unit that performs better overall than its separate constituent parts. The most common form of composite element in construction is a steel-concrete composite, however, other types of composites include; steel-timber, timber-concrete, plastic-concrete etc.

The study of strength of materials often refers to various methods of calculating the stresses and strains in structural members such as beams, columns, and shafts. The methods employed to predict the response of a structure under loading and its susceptibility to various failure modes takes into account the properties of the materials such as its yield strength, ultimate strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio in addition the mechanical element's macroscopic properties (geometric properties), such as its length, width, thickness, boundary constraints and abrupt changes in geometry such as holes are considered.

Structural Analysis is the analysis of a given structure subjected to some given loads and the idea is to predict the response of the structure, as you may know that this is exactly what is expected of all sciences. It is the application of solid mechanics to predict the response in terms of forces and displacements of a given structure. It could be an existing structure or a new structure subject to specified loads. It includes the application of a Matrix method for nonlinear geometric or second order elastic analysis and critical load prediction of structures.

Earthquake engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that designs and analyzes structures, such as buildings and bridges, with earthquakes in mind. Its overall goal is to make such structures more resistant to earthquakes. An Earthquake engineer aims to construct structures that will not be damaged in minor shaking and will avoid serious damage or collapse in a major earthquake. Seismic structural analysis is a powerful tool of earthquake engineering which utilizes detailed modeling of the structure together with methods of structural analysis to gain a better understanding of seismic performance of building and non-building structures.

Prestressed structure is a  construction material which is placed under compression prior to it supporting any applied loads (i.e. it is "pre" stressed). This compression is produced by the tensioning of high-strength "tendons" located within or adjacent to the concrete or steel volume, and is done to improve the performance of the structure in service. Tendons may consist of single wires, multi-wire strands or threaded bars, and are most commonly made from high-tensile steels, carbon fiber or aramid fiber. The essence of prestressed structure is that once the initial compression has been applied, the resulting material has the characteristics of high-strength concrete when subject to any subsequent compression forces, and of ductile high-strength steel when subject to tension forces. This can result in improved structural capacity and serviceability compared to conventionally reinforced concrete in many situations.

Why Japan???
Society has grown rapidly from strength to strength. As a result of the Society's effort, there has been an upsurge of interests in Japan towards the consideration of Tall Buildings Construction. It has been very active in bringing together all those involved in research, teaching, design, fabrication, manufacture and construction of Steel and Concrete Structures in this region. This is made possible through the organization of seminars, evening talks and publications of quarterly newsletters. The Society has also co-sponsored a number of international and regional conferences and has arranged workshops and short courses on various aspects of Steel and Concrete Structures. In order to bring closer new research findings and latest developments in construction, we are taking a forward step for hosting the conference in Japan. The Japanese construction industry is also projected to grow at a rate of 1.2 percent annually through 2019 with the vision of Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.
·       The construction industry has important linkages with other sectors, so that its impact on GDP and economic development goes well beyond the direct contribution of construction activities.
·      In real terms, the Japanese construction industry will expand slowly over the forecast period (2018-2020), with investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education and housing construction projects continuing to drive growth. Growth will also be driven by the country's Vision 2020, under which the government aims to develop road, rail, airport and other infrastructure projects.
·      Infrastructure and commercial building projects related to the 2020 Olympic Games will also be a source of growth. The industry's output value in real terms is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.26% over the forecast period, compared to 1.99% during the review period (2011-2015).

Construction Market and Trends
The country's construction industry is expected to be supported by the Japan Vision 2020 program, through which the government aims to reconstruct earthquake-damaged properties across the country. Construction is strong but shortages of labour are driving up labour costs, especially in Tokyo. Land and real estate prices have also risen sharply in anticipation of the 2020 Olympic Games, possibly indicating a bubble forming in the city. Infrastructure spend remains high, work has started on the maglev railway from Tokyo to Nagoya to run at 500km/h at a cost of USD48bn with 80 percent in tunnels. Work starting on the new Kengo Kuma’s stadium for the 2020 Olympics has replaced the original Zaha Hadid design due to escalating costs and protests from other architects regarding the project’s sensitivity to the site.

The Growth rate of Buildings in Japan is observed statistically as shown above. Mostly 100-199 m height buildings are constructed in the region keeping the view of Seismic issues. However, the height of the Japanese buildings stagnates at 300 m at the highest, which is low ranked in the world. Furthermore, they do not have reached the height two times of those of the buildings built approximately 50 years ago. Although the restriction imposed by the Civil Aeronautics Law lies behind, there is a risk of frequent earthquakes in this country that rarely happen in other countries in the world. For this reason, application of high-strength steel to building steel frames was started belatedly following the application to bridges.

Structural Material
The enhanced steel and concrete material performance encouraged constructions to jump and further conversely, new structure constructions have yielded technical innovation of steel and concrete materials. As for buildings, accompanied by the trend in high rising of buildings, the strength of structural materials was enhanced, and developed was the steel and concrete materials excellent in seismic resistance for the Constructions in the region.

The construction industry, accounting for about 10 percent of both GDP and all employed persons, is one of the core industries in Japan. Construction investments at current prices had been on a declining trend after reaching a peak of 84 trillion yen in fiscal 1992, and fell to half of this peak (42 trillion yen) in fiscal 2010, but turned upward in fiscal 2011. Construction investments in fiscal 2014 amounted to 51.3 trillion yen at current prices, up 0.0 percent compared to the previous fiscal year; they totaled 46.7 trillion yen at constant fiscal 2005 prices, down 2.6 percent from the previous fiscal year. This can be considered to be the impact of recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake as well as improvements in the economic climate.

Steel producing Countries overview
In Japan designing of steel structure constructions in dawn days of steel works construction owed greatly to the activities of engineers. The biggest steel producing country is currently China, thereby followed Japan. The technologies of steel structure construction so cultivated spread nationwide to naval arsenals, shipbuilding yards, and so on and lead the development of the steel structure technologies in Japan.

There are many grades and types of steel available in the market today classified broadly into Stainless Steel, Alloy Steel, Tool Steel, and Carbon Steel. The top steel producing countries are China, JapanIndia, US, RussiaSouth KoreaGermanyBrazil in 2015, China produced 803.83 million metric tons of Crude Steel accounting for 50.3% of the world’s total production.
